Backup Quarterback Battle

July 13th, 2009 | by Mark Hooper |

According to the Monroe News Star, the battle for backup quarterback job between Joey Harrington and Mark Brunell is still ongoing.

Hoops view: Neither player is a long-term option. Harrington has looked poorly in camp so far, and Brunell brings to mind Brad Johnson in Dallas last season.  Johnson was considered a smart veteran presence that could fill in for a couple of games if necessary and manage the team well enough to stay in contests. But Johnson (like Brunell) is just too long in tooth to be able to be counted on.  And Harrington?  We have seen enough of him during his NFL career to know that he’s a turnover machine.  Leopards don’t change their spots, and Harrington would be a disaster for anything other than a couple of series.

Hey, we all know with salary caps how difficult it is to have a competent quarterback backup, but surely on the slag heap of veterans out there we could manage to find a warm body with some sort of upside. If the unthinkable happens and Brees goes down for any period of time, the season is basically over.
